This group of pictures is an extension of an earlier theme I explored. “Reflections and Shadows” is a play on words intended to direct and challenge the viewer when looking at a seemingly simple image.
Reflection = to think, to mirror an image/situation.
Shadow = to cast a shadow, to follow.
I have chosen to depict a series of images, which reinvent classic arrangements in a modern setting. The still lifes are strongly influenced by the current trend for minimalist interiors. I have selected “old fashioned” items (ie flowers more associated with Grandma than trend setting interior designers) to signify never really getting away from the past... and/or the shadows cast by our past on our lives today. Apart from the reflections in silver, I am also fascinated by the way light is “reflected” from material and have indulged my obsession by depicting a woman in classic poses.
A selection of these pictures were exhibited in the Cockleshell Gallery, Duncannon, Co. Wexford (29th April - 15th June 2011).
