Reflections and Shadows

This body of work is entitled Reflections and Shadows” and formed part of an exhibition in the Weingeist Gallerie, Poing (Nov./Dec. 2010).

I like to use a play on words for my theme to direct and challenge the viewer when looking at a seemingly simple image.

Reflection = to think, to mirror an image/situation.
Shadow = to cast a shadow, to follow.
I have chosen to depict a series of still lifes, which are strongly influenced by the current trend for minimalist interiors. At the same time, I have selected “old fashioned” items (ie flowers more associated with Grandma than trend setting interior designers) to signify never really getting away from the past... and/or the shadows cast by our past on our lives today. With the wine-glass based pictures, the shadows are cast by alcohol, which need not be interpreted in a purely negative way. I wish to convey the positive contribution alcohol can make... Conviviality, conversation, humour, breaking bread with friends etc. These pictures have evolved to include human forms, to signify how alcohol is involved in/shadows our lives in many ways.
